A gift from an alumna and spouse will go to create an endowed chair within Bethel’s Department of Business.
On Sept. 27, Pam Tieszen, vice president for advancement, announced the $2 million estate gift that will establish the Douglas C. and Jane M. Seibel Endowed Chair in Accountancy. Jane Seibel is a Bethel graduate.
Lucas DuPriest, senior from Fort Collins, Colorado, and Fjaras, Sweden, has been awarded the 2015 A.O. Duer Scholarship by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
The scholarship is named in honor of former NAIA secretary A.O. Duer’s 26 years of service to the organization. It has been presented yearly since 1967 to one female and one male junior student-athlete, selected from all member institutions. The award is based on excellence in scholarship, character, citizenship and playing ability.
The scholarship first instituted to celebrate Bethel’s 125th anniversary in 2012 guarantees at least $50,000 of institutional aid over four years to the following groups of incoming freshmen:
The practical application of this guarantee is that after academic merit scholarships and any performance, departmental or service learning scholarships are awarded, any student for whom that total is below $12,500 will receive additional Bethel aid up to $12,500 per year.
For the first time in many years, John Gaeddert ’50 of North Newton did not have a table of his creations in wood for sale at Fall Festival.
However, the Regier Art Gallery in Luyken Fine Arts Center was full of his work, in an exhibit that opened Sept. 30, titled “Revelations in Wood: The Sculpture of John Gaeddert, 1950–2015.”
The exhibit was curated by Gaeddert’s grandson, Nathan Bartel ’02 of North Newton. The sculptures range in size from around six feet to six inches, and are created from pieces of wood that Gaeddert found in Kansas or Colorado – Osage orange, black walnut, bristlecone pine, cherry, ash and others.

Kauffman Museum’s traveling exhibit “Sorting Out Race: Examining Racial Identity and Stereotypes in Thrift Store Donations” is currently on display at the Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno. In March, it moves to the Renton (Washington) History Museum.

Audra Miller, San Francisco, is a project associate for Delivering Innovation in Supportive Housing (DISH) SF. After graduating from Bethel in 2014, she dedicated two years to Mennonite Voluntary Service, where she initiated the “Everyone Deserves a Home” project, a large-scale public portrait series featuring formerly homeless San Franciscans.

Pamela K. Tieszen, Bethel College vice president for advancement, has submitted her resignation, effective Dec. 31.
She will become superintendent for Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Mennonite School.
“I have appreciated Pam’s leadership and work in our advancement office over the past two-and-a-half years,” said Bethel President Perry D. White. “She has worked quickly and effectively to learn the art of fundraising while managing a good deal of change in personnel, processes and technology within the office during her short time with us.
