Alumni, friends of bethel invited to new volunteer opportunity

Alumni and friends of Bethel now have a new opportunity to contribute volunteer time and energy to improving the campus for both students and visitors.

Dalene White, spouse of President Perry D. White and Bethel’s chief volunteer, has organized a Volunteer Service Corps, “open to anyone interested in volunteering on campus in a variety of ways,” she said.

A Bethel alumnus first came up with the idea of organizing volunteers who would work at “enhancing the beauty of the campus.”

Dalene White and the volunteers already spruced up parts of Haury Hall and, more recently, began helping maintenance clear the old Science Hall so it can be transformed into a new Academic Center.

For more information contact Dalene White at (316) 283-2821 or by e-mail.

Bethel has several champions in state forensics

Four members of the Bethel forensics squad earned trophies at the Kansas Individual Events Championship Tournament at Sterling College Saturday, Feb. 19.

Sophomores Chris Riesen, Beatrice, Neb., and Aaron Rudeen, Osage City, are state champions in Duo Interpretation; Brandon Schwager, junior from Lawrence, in Impromptu Speaking; and Marike Stucky, freshman from Moundridge, in Poetry Interpretation.

These and other strong performances in forensics helped Bethel bring home third place in the individual events team sweepstakes. Thirteen schools, including Bethel, competed.

With her top finish in Poetry Interpretation, Stucky qualified for her third event in the American Forensic Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET). She had already qualified in Dramatic Interpretation and Programmed Oral Interpretation.

Joe Fitch, sophomore from Independence, Mo., also qualified for his second event at AFA-NIET with a second-place finish in Dramatic Interpretation. He had already qualified, with Taylor Ambrosi, freshman from Independence, Mo., in Duo Interpretation.

Bethel now has eight members of its forensics squad qualified for AFA-NIET in nine different events. The national tournament will be held this year at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, April 1-4.

Sky-watchers try to see 110 objects in a night in celestial marathon

Rising temperatures (at least a little), days getting longer and the earth hurtling in its orbit toward the vernal equinox can only mean one thing.

Spring, of course, but more to the point, the annual Messier Marathon, said Bethel assistant professor of physics and astronomy Tracy Tuttle.

“Each spring, astronomers around the world convene to party all night under the stars and test their mettle with the daunting challenge of observing and/or imaging all 110 Messier objects - the most beautiful and interesting celestial objects in the sky - in one night,” Tuttle said....

This year’s annual marathon will be held Friday, March 4, “and almost everyone is virtually invited,” Tuttle said. “We have a collaborative group this year comprised of Outhouse Observatory - me - the North Central Kansas Astronomical Society (NCKAS), SETEC Observatory in Goddard, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University and Etscorn Observatory at New Mexico Tech, with Bethel graduate Luke Schmidt.”

Bethel senior to make directing debut with Steve Martin play

Bethel senior Clint Harris, Manhattan, has spent the last three-and-a-half years singing, dancing and acting at every opportunity.

For his final project, Harris has placed himself on the other side, as he directs Steve Martin’s (yes, that Steve Martin) comedy “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”

In the play, which premiered in 1993, Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, age 25 and 23, respectively, meet at a bar called the Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit) in Paris. The date is Oct. 8, 1904, when both men are on the verge of amazing ideas (Einstein will publish the special theory of relativity in 1905 and Picasso will paint “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” in 1907). When they find themselves at the Lapin Agile, they have a long debate on the value of genius and talent.

Though Harris has directed one-acts at Bethel, this is his first time leading a full-length production....

“Picasso at the Lapin Agile” will be on the Krehbiel Auditorium stage in the Fine Arts Center Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 3, 4 and 5, starting at 7:30 each evening.

Bethel alumnus kicks off March Madness at Kauffman Museum

Brian D. Stucky ’75, Goessel, will present an illustrated lecture on vintage basketball gyms at Kauffman Museum at 3:30 p.m. March 6, a Sunday-Afternoon-at-the-Museum presentation.

Stucky spent six years researching basketball gymnasiums built in Kansas before 1950 for his book “Hallowed Hardwood.” Now in its third printing, the book includes photographs and stories by coaches and star players across the state.

Stucky’s storytelling will take the audience from Burrton’s tiny court with narrow balconies to the awesome Allen Fieldhouse at the University of Kansas, and will include Memorial Hall on campus, where he practiced with Bethel’s 1973 championship basketball team. Following the presentation will be an opportunity for members of the audience to share their favorite basketball memories.

Stucky will sign “Hallowed Hardwood,” available in the museum store as well as Anderson Office Supply, the Kansas Sports Museum and Stucky’s website.

Stucky teaches art and photography at Goessel High School and is a former basketball coach. His work to preserve Kansas basketball history was recognized in 2010 when the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association granted him the Clint Hill Service Award.

The program is free and open to the public as part of Kauffman Museum’s year-long celebration of Kansas history. For more information contact Kauffman Museum at (316) 283-1612 or by e-mail.
