Bethel web site gets makeover

Bethel’s most widely viewed public face has gotten a makeover. Go to www.bethelks.edu and see for yourself. Perhaps more important, if you know a student who’s looking at colleges, direct her/him there. The site has a new design, new navigation systems and many new features--such as an online application form, interactive admissions counselor locator map, 360-degree view of campus and interactive calendar--and content has been extensively updated.

The Web site has been a priority for Lori Livengood, director of marketing and institutional communications, since she began in the position a little over a year ago. Brian Stucky ’02, network administrator and Webmaster, has put in many extra hours developing the new site, which has been built from the ground up by Bethel staff specifically for Bethel College. The Web project got a boost when Alissa Cyphers ’98 began in mid-January as full-time Web editor, a position that ensures that the site will be kept up-to-date.

Institutional Communications and IT staff are eager to hear from users about what they like or don’t like about the site, as well as mistakes or omissions they might find. Feel free to use the “Send us a note” link when you visit the new www.bethelks.edu .

Largest ever nursing class holds lamplighting

The nursing class of 2008, the largest ever admitted to Bethel, held the traditional lamplighting for juniors on Sunday, Feb. 11, at the college. Fifty (one in absentia) students participated in the ceremony. The largest lamplighting group previously was last year’s, with 45 students.

Director of nursing Gregg Schroeder noted that, in addition to being the largest class, this one is also the most diverse in Bethel’s history. It includes nine men as well as 18 students who are foreign-born, coming from Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Laos, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo and Vietnam.

Bethel and Hesston team up to produce musical

Last summer, the academic deans and communication arts faculty from Bethel College and Hesston College met to talk about ways they could pool their resources. They noted this: Bethel no longer has a formal theater program. Hesston, which does, currently has no theater. After a discussion of schedules and potential challenges, faculty from the institutions decided to collaborate on a play.

The result is a joint production of the musical “Brigadoon” by students and faculty from the two colleges. The director is Megan Tyner, professor of theater at Hesston. The choreographer is Margaret Mead-Finizio, instructor of communication arts at Bethel. The musical director is William Eash, professor of music at Bethel.

The musical will be on stage in Krehbiel Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 1-3. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. To reserve tickets, call Thresher Bookstore at (316) 284-5205.

“Brigadoon,” first produced in 1947 by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, is the story of a magical village in Scotland that appears for only one day every hundred years, and two American tourists who stumble upon this village just before the celebration of a wedding.
